§ I

The bees of the Blue Ridge

Apis mellifera, feral survivors, and the Italian bloodlines that colonized the southern Appalachians from the 1890s forward.

No candle without wax; no wax without the bee. The High Country bee story is largely an Italian-honeybee story — Italian queens imported from Bologna in the 1860s reached the southern Appalachians by wagon and rail, and the mild-mannered yellow-gold bees found the cool, nectar-rich summers of Watauga County nearly ideal.

Two strains dominated early: the Italian (Apis mellifera ligustica) favored for its tongue length and brood pattern, and the hardy Carniolan (A. m. carnica), which handles the cold Banner Elk winters with a tight winter cluster. Both make white-to-cream cappings that translate, after rendering, into the pale ivory wax prized by taper-makers.

By the 1990s the feral survivor stock — descendants of the 1957 Africanized release in Brazil that hybridized northward — had largely been absorbed into Appalachian apiaries. The current High Country bee is a mongrel: gentle, thrifty, swarms in May, stores sourwood and clover.

§ II

Rendering & cleaning wax

From uncapped brood comb to the bright yellow cake on the wax-room shelf.

Wax rendering is the slow side of the candle business. Honey-comb cappings — the thin wax lids bees draw over finished honey — are the cleanest source. Brood comb, darkened by years of cocoons, yields a brown wax with the smell of propolis and the memory of every nectar flow the colony worked.

The method is unchanged for two centuries. Comb goes into a double boiler (never direct heat — beeswax ignites at 400°F and a scorched batch is ruined for tapers). Water and wax separate on cooling; the wax disc floats free of the slumgum, the dark protein residue that sinks.

A second melt through a filter bag — old cotton pillowcase or paint-strainer nylon — removes the last debris. Sun rendering, the slow summer method, works a single batch over two weeks in a glass-topped box angled at the south sun. The result is a yellow cake that smells like the inside of a hive on a hot afternoon.

The wax cake is the candle-maker's currency. A clean pound is a long taper, or four votives, or six tea-lights. A muddy pound is one outdoor torch at most. The discipline of clean rendering is what separates the craftsperson from the hobbyist.

§ III

Hand-dipped tapers

Twelve seconds in, twelve seconds out, repeated twenty-eight times.

The taper is the original candle — a length of cotton wick dressed in wax, made the same way in the High Country since the 1840s. The frame holds twelve wicks at a time, hung from a wooden dowel across the kettle. Each dip is twelve seconds in the wax, twelve seconds out, with the operator sliding the frame in a slow arc to build a slight taper toward the tip.

Twenty-eight dips produce a twelve-inch taper that burns for about an hour. The first six dips are the slow ones — the wick must be wetted through with wax before it accepts a coat. The middle dips add bulk. The final four to six are the polish coat, dipped slightly cooler so the surface shines.

Wick sizing is the secret of a clean-burning taper. Too thin and the wax pools unburned; too thick and the flame smokes. A standard 1/2" pair of tapers uses a #2/0 square braid for beeswax — the rough cotton fibers hold the molten wax and feed the flame evenly down the full length of the candle.

Votives, pillars, tea-lights

The moulded candle — quick to make, harder to perfect.

Once you have a mould, you have a candle. The mould is a thin aluminum or polycarbonate tube with a wick pin at the base; the operator threads a primed wick through the pin, sets the mould on its rubber gasket, and pours melted wax from the kettle.

The pour temperature matters more than the wax itself. Too hot and the candle shrinks from the mould as it cools, leaving an air pocket at the base. Too cool and the candle comes out cloudy with trapped air bubbles. The window is 160–170°F for most beeswax, with a second warming pour at 175°F to top up the sink hole that forms as the candle cools.

The votive is the small table candle — a one-and-a-half inch pillar cast in a polycarbonate mould, designed to sit in a glass holder. The pillar runs three to six inches tall, dressed with cotton wick at the center, and burns three to six hours. The tea-light is the modern shape — a half-inch wax cup with a thin aluminum wick, burning four hours and disposable. All three take the same wax; only the mould and the wick change.

The High Country candle-makers

A short ledger of working studios from Boone to West Jefferson.

The High Country candle trade is small but persistent — a dozen working studios, most run from kitchen tables or converted woodshops, supplying the regional farmers' markets and the Mast General Store chain. The studios below are the ones that have been doing this long enough to have built a wax room, a frame, and a customer list.

The kettle & the dip-frame

Equipment, temperatures, and the rhythm of the work.

A working dip-frame is a wooden dowel about eighteen inches long, with twelve eye-hooks set three inches apart. The hooks hold the primed wicks; the operator carries the frame across the kettle and dips. The kettle itself is a deep aluminum pot — never cast iron (rust spots the wax), never copper (copper turns the wax green).

The kettle sits on a thermostatically controlled hot plate or a propane burner with a thermostat. Wax is held at 170–180°F throughout the dipping session. A candy or wax thermometer clipped to the side of the kettle is not optional — overheating ruins a batch in minutes.

A session — the working rhythmThree hours for a full frame

Setup: thirty minutes to pre-wick the frame and bring the kettle to temperature. Dipping: two hours for the first twelve-taper batch, with rests every six dips to let the wax set. Curing: overnight on the frame, then trim, then store. A working taper-maker finishes two frames a day, or 24 tapers, plus the morning's rendering and the evening's pour.

§ VII

Seasonal rhythm & the Christmas trade

A High Country candle year, August through April.

The candle year in the High Country begins in August, when the first honey extraction yields the season's first wax. By October the studios are dipping tapers for the Christmas trade; by December the candle is the second-largest gift sold at the Mast General stores (after cast-iron skillets). January is the quiet month — repair, inventory, plan the next year's frames.

  • January–March — repair, inventory, frame-building, and the early-spring bee school sessions. Quiet months; candle studios close early.
  • April–May — swarm season. New hives established; the cycle resets with the first dandelion flow.

The High Country candle year closes and opens with the bees. The studio that runs out of wax in February is buying rendered cakes from a sister studio in Madison County; the studio that overflows in November is sending its surplus to a sister studio in Hendersonville. The candle trade is small, regional, and quietly cooperative.

Why this craft.

A candle is the bees' work held still long enough to burn.

The candle has been the candle for three thousand years — a wick dressed in wax or tallow, lit at one end, burning down at the other — but the modern regional candle trade in the High Country is younger than that, and quieter. It rests on the beehive, the kettle, and the frame; it survives because there are still people who want a taper that was dipped by a person rather than poured by a machine.1

The deeper roots are bee-and-wax, not Yankee-candle-and-scent. The Italian honeybee (Apis mellifera ligustica) reached the southern Appalachians in the 1860s by wagon and rail, and the cool, nectar-rich summers of Watauga County turned out to be nearly ideal for honey production.2 By 1896 the first documented beekeeper in Watauga was keeping bees in a Langstroth hive; by the 1930s the regional candle-makers were rendering their own wax and dipping their own tapers. The candle trade in this ledger is the contemporary descendant of that line.

What the High Country candle trade has that the urban candle-maker does not is the hive, the wood, and the long winter. The hive yields the wax; the wood fuels the rendering pot; the long winter is the candle's natural market. The studios in this ledger are the public face of the tradition; the Watauga County Beekeepers Association and the High Country Bee School are the institutional layer; the dip frame and the mould are the working tools. Beeswax candles burn brighter, longer, and cleaner than petroleum candles, and they smell faintly of the inside of a hive on a hot afternoon.3

§ X

How it's done — a working primer.

Five stages from hive to finished taper. The kettle is the bottleneck.

Candle-making is two crafts in one: the bee-keeping that yields the wax, and the dipping or pouring that shapes it. The bee-keeping half is a year-round cycle; the candle-making half is a six-week push from October through November, with the Christmas trade as the prize.

Stage one — renderingFrom comb to clean wax

The cappings and brood comb go into a double boiler — never direct heat; beeswax ignites at 400°F. Water and wax separate on cooling; the wax disc floats free of the slumgum, the dark protein residue that sinks. A second melt through a filter bag removes the last debris. The clean wax is poured into a cake mold and stored.4

The wick is primed by dipping it in molten wax and letting it set, so it stiffens and burns evenly.

Stage three — dippingThe 28-dip taper

The primed wick is hung from a wooden dipping frame and dipped into the kettle, held at 170–180°F. Each dip is twelve seconds in, twelve seconds out. Twenty-eight dips produce a twelve-inch taper that burns for about an hour. The first six dips are slow ones that wet the wick through; the middle dips add bulk; the final four to six are the polish coat, dipped slightly cooler.

Stage four — mouldingVotives, pillars, tea-lights

Moulded candles are poured rather than dipped. The mould is a thin aluminum or polycarbonate tube with a wick pin at the base; the operator threads a primed wick through the pin, sets the mould on its rubber gasket, and pours melted wax from the kettle at 160–170°F. A second warming pour at 175°F tops up the sink hole as the candle cools.

Stage five — curing and trimThe overnight rest

Tapers cure overnight on the frame, then are trimmed and stored in a cool, dark place. Moulded candles cure on the rack for twenty-four hours before the mould is removed. Properly cured candles burn cleaner and longer than rushed ones; the cure is half the craft.

The High Country connection.

One bee school, one beekeepers' association, and the Mast General Store chain.

The High Country candle trade rests on a small bench of regional institutions, all within a day's drive of Newland. The trade is older than most of them; the institutions are younger than the trade.

The Watauga County Beekeepers Association, founded in the 1970s, meets the second Tuesday of every month at the Agricultural Extension office on King Street in Boone. Open to beginners, with a swarm-catch list each spring. The Association is the institutional face of regional bee-keeping and the parent body for most of the candle-makers in this ledger.5

The High Country Bee School, run each March at the Valle Crucis conference hall, is a one-day Saturday workshop for new and aspiring beekeepers. The School draws 80–120 students a year and is the regional introduction to the Langstroth hive, the swarm cycle, and the first-year honey pull. The candle-makers in this ledger learned their bee-keeping at the School.

The Mast General Store chain, founded 1883 in Valle Crucis, is the regional retail anchor for the candle trade. The Mast stores stock every candle-maker profiled in this ledger during the November-through-December holiday run, and the candle is the second-largest gift sold at the Mast stores after the cast-iron skillet.6 The chain's annual Old Timey Christmas event, held the first Saturday of December, is the regional public debut for the year's taper run.
